A short story of the alpargata!


Around 1830, Basque immigrants to Argentina introduced a lightweight canvas shoes that became some years later became the "alpargatas". Yet, we can thank the gauchos for spreading the popularity of the shoe. They loved the comfortability and versatility of the alpargatas. In their travels around Patagonia, El Litoral, or the High Andes, the gauchos walked on foot and rode on horseback... always wearing their alpargatas.

As time passed, the alpargata became a popular and important part of the PorteƱo wardrobe and spread to almost every city along Argentina. 

Alpargatas started to be used by almost everybody. The alpargata, traditionally made in black or white, became everybody day shoe for Argentina. For people who valued a breathable and glove-like shoe, the alpargata was and are now, the perfect fit!
